Web Accessibility Resources
Section 508 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act took effect in June of
2001. A presentation was made at the CATS Conference in March of that
year to detail the 508 requirements for websites, and to discuss ways
to address the issue on the CSU campuses. ADA continues to be an
important topic and hands-on and presentation sessions have been held
at each subsequent CATS. In addition, a number of TIGERS grants
pertaining to ADA have been funded. Below are links to the output of
these projects.
Accessibility Community of Practice
In Fall 2005, a Community of Practice (CoP) for accessibility
professionals within the CSU was created. Launch meetings were held,
with participants from the CATS core community as well as Disabled
Student Services professionals. A website was designed for the CoP to
share information, resources, and to foster collaboration.
Video: Web Accessibility: Access for All
Each CSU campus received a copy of this 10-minute video, which provides
an overview of web accessibility while offering insights into disabled
users' experiences. A presenter's guide (PowerPoint slides and text
files) as well as information about online resources, are available at
the website.

Video: Know Your User
This video examines web accessibility from the disabled user's
perspective, and shows what tools and methods they find useful. CSU
campuses received a copy of this video as well. This video won a
national Telly award.

Designing Web Pages for Users with Disabilities CD-ROM
This CD contains a multimedia PowerPoint presentation featuring clips
from the above videos, integrated within a presentation suitable for
introducing web accessibility in a workshop or classroom setting.
Again, each CSU campus received a copy.
Additional copies of these products are available for purchase. Contact Candace Egan.
Accessibility Learning Modules
These training modules are intended for use by faculty who produce online learning materials, staff who are responsible for authoring university web pages, web developers, and IT staff responsible for educational campaigns on web accessibility.

Center for Alternative Media (CAM) (requires password to access materials)
Two TIGERS grants focused on AB422, which mandates that electronic versions of textbooks be made available to students with disabilities. After conducting a systemwide survey to gather information about practices and costs, the data was used to implement a shared database to provide information about campus practices. The systemwide Center for Alternative Media (CAM) was a result of these projects.
