This was a session from last night on the state of software. The updates were done in 5 minutes, hence the term "lightning".


Here are my notes:



State of:
Project GlassFish

  • Java EE 5(note jump in versioning of J2EE).blogs.sun.com/theAquarium
  • java.sun.com/javaee/theAquarium


GNOME

  • Very poorly presented.
  • Some updates on the GNOME conference in Spain.
  • A tiny mention of Summer of Code projects from Google and the fact that no women applied.


SQLite

  • small SQL embeddable engine
  • serverless, zero config, fully ACID
  • load DLLs or shared libs
  • Full-text search
  • Cellphones, MP3, etc.
  • <=230KiB
  • Licensed under Public domain (not sure why?)


Eclipse

  • Gaining momentum - the foundation is a 501c6 type organization.
  • Over 60 projects
  • 17 strategic members (250k per year)
  • Eclipse Callisto - 10 projects with coordinated releases
  • 7 countries, 7 million lines of code
  • Modular architecture

  • Python web framework, kinda like Ruby on Rails
  • Comes from existing project from middle of Kansas!
  • Created in 2003, oss'ed in 2005
